On Wednesday September 7, Frank will be representing RDS at the Main Street Chamber Expo! The Chamber is a national organization of small businesses that become members for networking (and therefore growth) benefits, as well as information about the latest news in business.

Cell phones have become such a part of our lives, it seems odd when someone doesn’t own one.

But our handy cell phones contain some very nasty chemicals and heavy metals. When cell phones are dumped into landfills or burned in waste incinerators, the following toxins are released into the environment:

These toxins have been associated with cancer and neurological disorders, primarily in children.

My Quest To Give To Charity While Keeping 250,000 Phones Out Of A Landfill

The idea came to me right before lunch.   Several thoughts must’ve been moving around my brain and they all bumped into one another at the same time.  It seemed so simple, once it all came together.

Thought #1: I work for a company that helps other companies and individuals recycle their old computer equipment.  We have a zero landfill policy and we ensure that nothing ends up in a landfill.

Thought #2: Over the weekend I had read that there are over 37 million cell phones gathering dust in people’s drawers around the country.

Thought #3: Our company is always looking for ways to give back to the community.  We decided that we would give back 10% of the proceeds from our recycling efforts to two organizations:  Cancer  and Autism charities.

The culmination of all this was an idea and a challenge:  What if I (we) could locate 250,000 old cell phones and get them recycled?  We’d have a quarter million less phones that would possibly head to a landfill.  We’d also have recycling proceeds that could go towards the fight against cancer and autism!

I’m going to work on this project, and blog about it, for one year.  I’ll keep track of our progress and update you on other items regarding this mission.  I will need all of your help to spread the news about my effort to everyone you know.  Tell your friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers.
